According to the latest rumors coming out of the tech grapevine, Nvidia has just discontinued production of the AD106 GPUs used to make Nvidia. GeForce RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti graphics card. The company is reportedly freeing up its production lines so that it can produce as many new RTX 5000 GPUs as possible in preparation for its rumored January 2025 launch.
We fully expect the new RTX 5090 to be the best graphics card when it finally launches, especially now that AMD has given up on high-end GPUs for the time being. However, Nvidia reportedly plans to launch not only this flagship GPU in the first three months of 2025, but also three other GPUs. This will require a lot of production capacity, which is why Nvidia is now apparently halting production of some Ada GPUs.
As with previous rumor stories, keep in mind that none of this comes directly from Nvidia, and this news is based on Give way From Chinese tech forum BoardChannels, e.g. spot By Videocardz and Gazlogso don’t take it as gospel truth. According to translation by the source, “the RTX 40 series has entered the final stage of inventory clearance, with only about two months left”, which means that not only the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti are being cleared, but the RTX 4090 will also be cleared. , 4080 and 4070.
More specifically, the source also said, “Nvidia has completely withdrawn the AD106 production line, all production capacity has been transferred to the RTX 50 series production line, and only the AD107 production line is temporarily retained.”
The AD106 GPU forms the basis of many key products in Nvidia’s current lineup, including many of the current RTX 4060 cards and all of the RTX 4060 Ti cards on the desktop, as well as the mobile RTX 4070 used in some of the best gaming laptop designs. Meanwhile, the AD107 GPU, which is reportedly still “tentatively reserved,” is used in some RTX 4060 desktop cards, including the first batch of models, as well as Nvidia’s mobile RTX 4050 and mobile RTX 4060 laptop GPUs.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 comes in several versions, based on the AD106 and AD107 GPUs, so it’s still possible to use the latter for production purposes. However, if this rumor is true, it seems that AD107 production will also be temporary, with Nvidia apparently planning to clear out its Ada inventory to make way for the new RTX 5000 series.
However, the AD107-based RTX 4060 may still be a cheaper option. After all, you can still buy some RTX 3060 and even RTX 2060 cards right now. Current rumors regarding release dates have the RTX 5060 arriving as soon as March 2025, the RTX 5070 possibly in February, and the RTX 5080 reportedly joining the 5090 at the CES trade show in January 2025 Appearance.
If you do want to buy an Ada graphics card before the end of the year, don’t panic. Even if this rumor is true, there’s still plenty of GeForce RTX 4060 stock available at regular prices, and it looks like there will still be stock available in the coming months. After that, Nvidia’s new GPUs are expected to launch, and you can learn more about what we can expect from them in our RTX 5000 guide.
