There’s bad news for anyone hoping to get their hands on a new product AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Gaming CPUs, as the stock situation doesn’t look like it will be resolved anytime soon. In fact, British tech retailer Overclockers has decided to be honest with its customers, admitting that it doesn’t expect to have enough stock of the new processors until next year.
We really liked the new AMD chip when we benchmarked it in our Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, and its extra clock speeds combined with Zen 5 architecture make for a powerful gaming CPU that’s also capable Handle heavy multi-threaded workloads. While the 9800X3D is undoubtedly the best gaming CPU you can buy right now, limited supply means it’s basically impossible to get your hands on it unless you’re willing to shell out a fortune to scalpers on eBay.
in its latest inventory renewOverclockers said it is “no longer accepting orders for the new 9800X3D” “as we don’t expect it to be available until early 2025.” The retailer invites customers to sign up for notifications to find out when the CPU will be available for purchase again. The company expects more shipments in November and December, but they’ve already been allocated, possibly for pre-orders and overclocking gamers’ own system builds.
AMD declined to comment on stock shortages when we contacted them, but all the CPUs we saw were sold out. In the U.S., Best Buy said it was “working to obtain additional inventory,” while Newegg attributed the problem to “high demand” and said it “will replenish inventory as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, several Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPUs are now on sale on eBay for between $600 and $700, significantly raising the already high asking price of $479. If you’re looking to buy a new gaming CPU now, we recommend buying the previous-generation Ryzen 7 7800X3D, or waiting for 9800X3D stock to stabilize.
The latter appears to take several months, though. We’re hoping Overclockers’ “early 2025” statement means we’ll be able to buy new CPUs at MSRP in January, but that may just be wishful thinking if there’s still not enough new CPUs in stock.
If you already have an older Socket AM4 Ryzen system, though, check out this Ryzen 7 5700X3D deal, which not only lets you upgrade to the new X3D CPU with 3D V-cache, but also gets 32GB of Corsair RAM into the bundle.
