The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has the performance of the company’s latest gaming CPU and it’s almost impossible to praise it highly enough. Technically, however, it still lags behind the Intel Core i9 14900K in terms of raw clock speed, at least until ASUS China general manager Tony Yu got his hands on the chip and achieved incredible results. AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Overclocking.
With the help of liquid nitrogen (LN2), Tony Yu managed to cool down the best gaming CPUs you can buy to around -190°C (-321°F), showing that the new AMD chips can be overclocked to 6.9GHz , and can still run “Counter-Strike 2” stably. As our AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D review shows, it’s not that you need to run the chip at these speeds to get amazing performance.
What’s more, at incredible clock speeds, the CPU allows CS2 to run at over 1,500 fps, as demonstrated by this video on the Chinese website Bilibili. Even without overclocking, the chip can still hit over 900fps, but 1,500fps is a somewhat mind-boggling number. At least when 1,000Hz monitors replace 540Hz gaming monitors, we’ll have chips that can service them.
More importantly, the power consumption of the 9800X3D is only 104W. Although the voltage provided is as high as 2.25V, the normal operating voltage of the chip is about 1.2V. It achieves this partly because running a CPU at such a low temperature is inherently more efficient (which is why superconducting products tend to require cryogenic cooling), but also because it’s inherently efficient anyway of chips. Under normal load, only about 80W of power is consumed when playing CS2, compared to the 140W of the Intel Core i9 14900K.
Of course, running a gaming CPU at cold temperatures is impractical for any kind of long-term use, let alone if you’re trying to place the CPU in one of the best PC case options out there. However, if you’re willing to give it a try, you’ll find that the 9800X3D has some fun potential.
Additionally, the chip can be overclocked to some extent without the need for special cooling. We’re still experimenting with our own overclocking results, but things like 386 Club The report states that when the chip operates at only 1.22V, it can easily reach 5.4GHz.
