AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date, price and specs

this AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date has been officially announced, along with the price and specifications of the new chip. This eight-core gaming CPU is the first of the new Ryzen 9000X3D chips to be released, inheriting the shortcomings of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and our tests show that it is much faster in games than Intel’s new Arrow Lake chips.

As we just found out in our new 9800X3D review, this new AMD chip lives up to its promise, making it the best gaming CPU you can buy right now. Not only does the new 9800X3D have a faster clock speed than the critically acclaimed Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but AMD also changed the location of the 3D V-cache chip, meaning it can run lower. At the same time, the move to the new AMD Zen 5 architecture has further improved its performance.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date

Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date is Thursday, November 7, 2024which was released a few weeks after Intel’s Arrow Lake and just in time for the holidays.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D price

Ryzen 7 9800X3D priced at $479which is $30 more than the original 7800X3D launch price, which shows that AMD is confident in charging a premium for this CPU, even though it only has 8 cores. This is expensive for an eight-core CPU, but if gaming is your priority, it’s worth it.

In comparison, the eight-core Ryzen 7 9700X without 3D V-cache currently sells for $325, which is significantly cheaper. Meanwhile, Intel’s closest competitors are the new Core Ultra 7 265K, which currently sells for about $400, and the Core i9 14900K, which currently sells for about $439.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Specifications

These are the Ryzen 7 9800X3D specs:

Ryzen 7 9800X3D
core 8
Number of threads 16
peak boost clock 5.2GHz
base clock 4.7GHz
L2 cache 8MB
L3 cache 96MB (32MB + 64MB 3D V cache)
surface mount technology Yes
TDP 120W
socket AMD socket AM5

The new 9800X3D does not install the 3D V-cache chip on the top of the CPU core like the previous AMD .

The idea is that this means the CPU core is closest to the heatsink and the contact plate of the CPU cooler, allowing AMD to keep the CPU core running cooler and increase clock speeds. However, the cache capacity remains unchanged at 64MB, which means the 9800X3D has a total of 96MB of L3 cache.

Speaking of which, the 9800X3D peak Boost clock speed is 5.2GHz, which is 200MHz higher than the 7800X3D’s 5GHz Boost clock. At the same time, the base clock of the 9800X3D is 4.7GHz, which is 500MHz higher than the 7800X3D. AMD says the 9800X3D will be 8% faster on average in games than the 7800X3D. Unlike the new Intel Arrow Lake CPU series, the 9800X3D is SMT enabled, which means it can execute 16 concurrent threads from 8 cores (instead of 8).
